Breakfast at Tiffany's with My Fair Lady, on a Roman Holiday

Hello & welcome to this fortnight’s edition of the GK Nugget. While January 20 th 2017 is a day that we will all remember& refer to for decades (for good or bad reasons, depending on your views) but 20 th January 1993 was a truly sad day because the gorgeous, talented, fashionable & evergreen British actress Audrey Hepburn died of appendiceal cancer at her home in Switzerland on that day. This fortnight’s GK Nugget pays a small tribute to the “Fair Lady”. Audrey Hepburn was born on 4 th May 1929 in Ixelles, a district of Brussels , though she spent her childhood between Belgium, England and the Netherlands. She was ranked by the American Film Institute as the third-greatest female screen legend in Golden Age Hollywood and was inducted into the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame . She shot to stardom for playing the lead role in Roman Holiday (1953) , for which she was the first actress to win an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA A

Friday the 13th: Unlucky or not?

Hello & welcome to another edition of the GK Nugget. First up, a big ‘ Best of Luck ’ to all those participating in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon today. Good going!! How’s your weekend been? Relaxed? Enjoyable? Or did you start the weekend cowering in fear on Friday the 13th  - like 17 to 21 million Americans who are affected by a fear of this day, making it the most feared day and date in history ? That’s right, this fortnight’s GK nugget is about that fearful day – Friday the 13th Historically, the superstition might have arisen during the Middle Ages based on the story of Jesus – He was crucified on a Friday with 13 people being a part of the Last Supper on the night prior to his crucifixion.   In 1907 Thomas W. Lawson's popular novel Friday the Thirteenth might have added to the superstition. The novel told the story of an unscrupulous broker who takes advantage of the superstition to create a panic on Wall Street on Friday the 13 th . Fear o

Hello & welcome to another GK Nugget – the 1 st of 2017. I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas & New Year’s eve. The last fortnight has been a period of monumental events over time – the USSR was peacefully dissolved on 25 th Dec 1991 ; 25 th December is also the birth date of Mohd Ali Jinnah (1876); India’s original superstar, Rajesh Khanna, was born on 29 th Dec 1942 while Rudyard Kipling, the famous British poet & author was born on 30 th December 1865 in Bombay, India. December 27 th 2016 saw the death of an iconic Hollywood actress – Carrie Fisher, who was immortalized by her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars films.  So this fortnight’s GK nugget is a tribute to her and the Star Wars movies.
