Discovering South Africa

Rainbow nation... Cape of Good Hope... last piece of land... safaris... Nelson Mandela...
So many thoughts come to your mind when you talk about South Africa.

Today I did a series of amazing interviews with people who are connected to South Africa in some way or the other on "Eyes on travel" - a special episode for CNNNEWS18,  about discovering that amazing country.

From the one and only Jonty Rhodes, who spoke about all the adventure sports that he's experienced - abseiling,  paragliding, sky diving and bungee jumping - to actress & film maker Pooja Bhatt, who spoke about the short period that she lived in Cape Town on her own and how she has also filmed there.
I also spoke with the South African minister of tourism, Derek Hanekom, about his views on safety and the India-South Africa connect, while Go Beyond Travel's Shantanu Chand shared his tips on making the best of a safari excursion in SA.
And finally Roxanne Bamboat (The Tiny Taster) told us what's the best thing to eat and where's the best place to shop while Hanneli Slabber, India Head of South Africa tourism cleared my doubts about visas, vaccinations and flights.

While I did get to see some glimpses of SA on the AVs we played out, this discussion has now made me eager to head there and also helped me ready a rough itinerary for my adventure holiday.

As we closed the show, Hanneli and I spoke about Robben Island and getting a brief glimpse into the life of by Nelson Mandela.
I was moved by what she said - a trip to Robben Island isn't just a discovery of the history of South Africa; it's a journey of self discovery. Looking out.towarfs Cape Town from in between the barred windows of the prison, you get a sense of what Mandela must have felt and you're overwhelmed by the purpose, the grit and the determination of that great man. When you've  had a glimpse into the lives led by these prisoners, you return home saying "I can do better. Whatever my situation, whatever my place in the world, I can do better."

Catch the episode very soon on CNNNEWS18. YouTube link coming soon.

Remembering JFK on his 100th Birthday

Hello & welcome to another edition of the GK Nugget. This weekend we’re talking about one of my favourite politicians (yes, there are some likeable ones too), who passed away too young. He was the leader of one of the superpowers of the world and 29 th May 2017 was his 100 th birth anniversary. I’m talking about John Fitzgerald Kennedy , famously known as JFK . JFK was the 35 th President of the USA from January 1961 up until 22 nd November 1963 , when he was assassinated. He was the youngest president of the country and also the youngest to die . JFK’s inaugural address had him reach out to all Americans – “ Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country ” – a line that is till date quoted in essays written by school and college going children. JFK led the US at the height of the Arms Race with Russia and also during the critical Cuban missile crisis . (In October 1962, U.S. spy planes discovered that Soviet missile bases had ...

This week's biggest fad!

How's your Sunday going? This week has seen the year's biggest fad develop  - No, I'm not talking about the excitement around Kabali . Instead I'm talking about Pokémon Go .  So this weekend's GK nugget is about this augmented reality game that is making people run around their neighbourhoods with their smartphones held high. First up, what is Pokémon? Pokémon is the name of a game released by Nintendo 20 years ago . It's a cult classic and led to many video game sequels, TV shows, movies & merchandise being sold. So why the excitement 20 years later? Nintendo has added a new twist to the game, using new age technologies which are easily available in smart phones (cameras, GPS & augmented reality capability) . So now people are downloading the app on their mobile phones to play the new version - Pokémon Go . And what's so different about the new version? When you start the game, Pokémon Go  uses your smart phone's camera ...

12 Must have Apps for Expats In India

So you’re an expat and a guest in our country? Welcome and I hope you have an enjoyable time. But let’s face it, this country of 1.3 billion people isn’t the easiest to navigate and takes some getting used to. Let technology come to your rescue and help you get what you want quickly, easily & cheaply (in most cases). So here’s a list of 12 must have Apps for Expats that makes life easier for them here in India. (I’ve given links to their websites – depending on the phone that you are using you can either download the apps by searching in the App Store or Google Play or be redirected from their websites.) 1)   Ola / Uber      Need to hail a cab? Conveniently log onto the Uber app or the Ola app. Both apps allow you to pay using credit cards though Ola also lets you pay cash (I’ve been told that Uber also accepts cash in India). Both apps also accept payment via mobile wallets like PayTM & MobiKwik (digital wallets – details below). ...
